Academic and Professional History
Bernadette Smith has long been passionate about New York City and determined to serve the residents of her beloved hometown. As an undergraduate, she attended the College for Human Services in New York, now known as Metropolitan College. After graduating with her Bachelor of Professional Studies in Human Services, she attended law school at the Jacob D. Fuchsberg School of Law in Huntington, New York. During her time in law school, she was very involved with the Black Law Students Association and the Minority Students Bar.
Upon obtaining her Juris Doctor, Bernadette worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Bronx County for six years. She left the District Attorney’s office to gain additional legal experience as a Principal Court Attorney. Bernadette was assigned to work closely with a Judge in the Criminal Term of the Bronx Supreme Court. These professional distinctions have equipped her with an extensive understanding of the local legal system. Additionally, since 1996, Bernadette has served as a trustee of the Metropolitan College of New York. Bernadette was the first alumna to serve as a trustee. She was also the first alumna to serve as Board Chair from 2000 to 2001. Bernadette has additional nonprofit experience as a trustee at the Urban Resource Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides life-saving, empowering social services for New Yorkers who are suffering and recovering from domestic violence.
Currently, Bernadette’s law practice serves Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx in the areas of employment law, family law, and criminal defense.
